What is a wedding breakfast?

Chatting with brides and grooms in our first round of meetings and so often I get a quizzical look when I start talking about the wedding breakfast. They're probably thinking 'why is my wedding planner talking about breakfast?!'

Although it might sound like I'm talking about scrambled eggs on toast, the wedding breakfast is the first meal you have together as a couple, after your wedding ceremony.

Why is it called a wedding breakfast?

There are a couple of theories as to why it's called a wedding breakfast. One stems from an old tradition from the 19th Century where couples would get married in the morning. After the ceremony, a meal would be served, which would usually be the first meal the guests have eaten that day.

Another theory states that the term wedding breakfast dates back to the 17th Century when wedding ceremonies were usually part of Eucharistic Mass and so newlyweds would have been fasting ahead of the service. The meal they shared afterwards was literally breaking the fast.

Whichever theory is true, it still makes sense, as breakfast is the first meal of the day, and the wedding breakfast is the first meal the bride and groom have together as a married couple.
